FRANKFURT CITY GUIDE

Frankfurt, located on both sides of the River Main in the south-west part of Germany is the the fifth largest city in Germany with a population now over 650,000. Combined with nearby populous regions, Frankfurt is the second largest metropolitan area in Germany after Berlin.

The city is known to be the largest financial centre in Europe and among institutions with a seat in Frankfurt one can find the European Central Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and the German Federal Bank. The transportation infrastructure of Frankfurt, is excellent, the Frankfurt International Airport is one of the biggest airports in Europe.

Frankfurt is also known for its many and large trade fairs, one of them the Motor Show and the Musikmesse, the world’s largest music fair. Frankfurt also boast a number of skyscrapers, (10 in number) which place the city among the top 3 in Europe. Partly as a result of its status as a major center for international commerce, Frankfurt is a true multinational city inhabited by over 180 nationalities.

SAFETY AND HEALTH

Frankfurt is a comparatively safe city and violent crime is rare. Physical crime is concentrated in the red light district around the central station, the district is a major hangout of many drug dealers/junkies. As in any other major city, pick-pocketing, bag-snatching and similar are frequent so remember to watch over your personal belongings especially at airports and railway stations.

When travelling on subway by night it is advised that you choose a carriage where there are other people, security guards travel in the first carriage after 21:00, every night. Tap water is safe for drinking.

There are 46 districts (Stadtteille or Ortsteille) which in turn are divided 118 small areas (Stadtbezirke) The 46 districts above are combined into 16 major area districts or
Ortsbezirke.

The currency used in Frankfurt is the Euro (EUR). There are 7 types of coins: 2 euro, 1 euro, 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents, 2 cents, and 1 cent. There are 7 types of bills: 500 euros, 200 euros, 100 euros, 50 euros, 20 euros, 10 euros, and 5 euros.

Exchange offices as well as ATMs are widely available in the city. Major credit cards are accepted in most large shops, and restaurants. Banks are closed on weekends but exchange offices at airports and major railway stations are open daily from 6am to 10pm.

Service charge is included in rates but giving small tips to hairdressers, taxi drivers and other service staff is common.
